Case Study Competition

The Case Study Competition dealt with the organizational philosophy of an Indian firm in the Retail Industry, Alpha Beta and Company that was rapidly expanding its operations. The company had a unique culture stressing on Indian-ness and Innovation. The challenge before this organization was to scale up its operations rapidly, meet its growing need of effective and efficient manpower as well as to ensure that its new employees were attuned to its cultural ethos.

Out of a total of 13 contesting teams from SCMHRD, NMIMS, Chetna Institute of Management, N. L. Dalmia Institute of Management, and SIMSR, four teams were selected for the final. The 15 minute presentations on the case were evaluated for merit by a panel comprising of Mr. Manish Kumar, GM-HR, Philips, Mr. S. C. Kalia, VP-HR, Total-Finaelf, Mr. Sharad Gangal, GM-HR, Cadbury and Mr. Sanjay Jog, Head HR, Pantaloons. After an intensive analysis of the case and of the innovative strategies suggested by the teams, the results were as follows: -

Winners: Narendra Parthasarthy and Mridula Sharma, SCMHRD
Runners-up: Farzeen and Aparna, Chetana Institute of Management

Debate

The event changed gear when 12 teams started debating on various HR issues of interest to the business community at large. The four best teams were identified during the course of a preliminary round adjudged by Mr. Gaurang Chandarana, Regional Collection Head, Standard Chartered Bank and Mr. Rugwed Sansare, HR Associate Head, L&T Infotech.

The responsibility of determining the best debating duo was transferred to the capable shoulders of Mr. Yagnesh Bhatt, GM HR, Nicholas Piramal, Mr. T. P. Aswath, Senior Manager HR, Patni Computers and Mr. Anil D'Souza, VP HR, Kotak Mahindra Mutual Funds. After several rounds of intense debating wherein forwarded hypotheses were scrutinized in depth and their respective merits determined through a structured process, the team that stole the show with their wit, rationale and resolute defense was the dynamic duo from, TISS, Mumbai.
