IIM Calcutta Students Take a STEP in the Right Direction

Previous

Not only are students at IIM Calcutta very eager to get a feel of foreign universities, universities abroad are also trying out innovative ways to attract students from different countries. Anshuman Sengar and Siddhartha Saha will be participating in the 'Internship in International Entrepeneurship' program in CBS (Denmark) wherein they will analyze a small start-up and complete a mini-consultancy business development project, in cooperation with CBS faculty. Similarly, ESCP Paris conducts a special program during this time of the year, which is designed keeping the international students in mind. Girichandra and Pankaj Jain from IIMC, along with students from 25 countries would participate in the 'International Business and Project Development' program.

Most of the affiliate universities that participate in the STEP program with IIM Calcutta are located in Europe or US, which has a culture and lifestyle quite different from that of India. Interestingly though, this does not pose a problem for the STEP students, as they feel that their alma mater in itself is a huge congregation of people from different regions, who speak different languages and have their own lifestyles. They think that their stay at IIM Calcutta has thereby equipped them with the adaptation skills that would assist them to adjust to a foreign culture quite comfortably.

Also, in order to make the students feel "at home" in foreign environs, B-schools appoint 'mentors'/'buddies' (sometimes people of Indian origin) who co-ordinate with students at IIM Calcutta. This communication starts at least one and a half months before the date of joining. This is supplemented by orientations programs conducted by some foreign b schools. Moreover, the IIM Calcutta alumni at these countries are more than eager to help the students out.

IIM Calcutta's STEP program is a critical factor, not only in terms of the academic value addition but also the kind of leverage it provides during the final placements of the students. According to Chiranjeev Kumar, who would be going to ESSEC based in France this term, "The STEP program sure gives an advantage at the time of final placement primarily due to the increasing number of MNCs coming to the campus. These companies prefer students that possess a global outlook and a foreign experience surely counts a lot."
