Previous

Referring to the present day context, Mr. R. P. K. Murugesan, Secretary, Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) mentioned that 'economic growth was leading to jobless growth'. He highlighted that the manufacturing sector had to grow stronger for generating more employment opportunities.
There should be mutual trust and not distrust between workers, management and employers.

Mr. Murugesan also shared his unhappiness over numerous labour legislations which had not helped in strengthening and sustaining industrial harmony but on the contrary, had resulted in distrust and disputes between the employers and the workers. He emphasized on the fact that the strike rates had come down but incident of lock outs had gone up. Attitudinal change both on the part of Trade Unions and Management could only lead to industrial harmony and that HR could not be controlled by law, he said.

During his remarks Mr. J. S. Saroha, Adviser - HR said that the Industrial harmony rested with the management and that no tailor made scheme could be made available for maintaining harmony. He also mentioned that the higher growth rate was possible in a climate of harmonious industrial relations. It will contribute to higher investment, improved productivity and efficiency needed for competing in global markets. In fact, Industrial Relations and Human Relations should be very transparent between the Employers, Management, Trade Unions and Workers; and both HR and IR should be complementary and supplementary to each other. There should be a flow of a transparent dialogue between Employers, trade unions and the workers - Unions should not be considered as an opposition party".

Earlier, in his welcome remarks, Prof. Venkata Ratnam, Director - International Management Institute mentioned that to avoid conflict, there was a need for dialogue. He urged the need for workers and management to come together without losing identity and stressed on the importance of building confident measures.
