IMI, Delhi Organizes Seminar on IR "Towards Strengthening & Sustaining Harmony"

Dr. Venkata Ratnam said there are different approaches to industrial relations: Unilateral view held by feudalistic managements which believe conflict is unnecessary. Radical view held by some unions, which hold the belief that conflict is unavoidable so long as capitalist system of production remains.
Pluralist view, which believes that conflict is unavoidable, but can be managed by dialogue comprising communication, consultation which can lead to cooperation and collaboration.

He also said that the competition or rivalry is not between management and labour in a company but international where the interests of labour and management of foreign companies compete with those of domestic companies.

The technical sessions focused on the success stories of companies like GSK, BOC, Hero Honda, JCB, Oriental Bank of Commerce. The representatives of labour departments from the governments of Rajastan, Haryana and Punjab shared their experiences. The Honda episode in Gurgaon came up for detailed discussion. The discussions pointed out that the incident could have been avoided if communication gap and ego hassles were dealt with deftly. The role of external environment impinging on the industrial relations climate in a company was highlighted. The need for managements to be proactive abiding the principle of equity and fairness, trust and transparency was highlighted.
