Annual Operations Management Seminar

Held on October 31, 2004

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode organized a one-day seminar "OPUS'04" on Operations Management on 31st October at their 100-acre campus in Kunnamangalam, Kozhikode. The theme for this debut event was "Operational excellence in the Indian Industry" and was organized in association with CII Institute of Logistics. Cochin Shipyard Limited was the sponsor of the event. Coca Cola supported the event as a Beverage Sponsor.

This seminar focused on best practices in the Industry like supply chain management (SCM), six-sigma, logistics and distribution management, synergy between SCM and logistics management, lean manufacturing, and total quality management (TQM).

The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Krishna Kumar, Director of IIM Kozhikode. He stressed the need for more events of this kind to take the institute to a higher level in terms of the value the institute would be able to deliver to the various industries in India.

Commodore M. K. Murthy, Chairman & MD, Cochin Shipyard Limited delivered the key note address. He gave a very inspiring talk on Operational excellence as a "change driver" in the Indian Industry, giving an example of Cochin Shipyard Limited. He opined that to retain existing market share and to grow in a competitive business environment, Indian companies will necessarily have to respond to the urgent needs for improving quality of product, competitive pricing and quicker response to change. He talked about R&R and iHOP which are techniques used in Cochin Shipyard to become the best shipyard in India.

The next event was introduction and context setting by Dr. N. Chandrashekharan, Senior Consultant, CII and Head CIL. He talked about the shifting paradigms in the Indian industry. His talk focused on best practices in Operations Management in the industry today. According to him the five enablers for achieving excellence were leadership, policy & strategy, people, partnership and processes. He embedded examples from Amul, Britannia, BHEL and PNB as case studies during his talk.
