INVESTRIX 2004: Annual Finance Meet

October 29-30, 2004

On the 29th and 30th of October’04, the likes of Mr. A. P. Kurien, Chairman, AMFI, Mr. V. Ranganathan, former Chief Secretary, Maharashtra State, Mr. Aroop Dutta, MD, Numeric Investors et al shared the dais of K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research (SIMSR); the occasion was Somaiya's Annual Finance Meet popularly known as INVESTRIX.

The day one, i.e., 29th October, started with the insights given by venerable Mr. S. A. Dave, Chairman, CMIE on the Pension Fund Reforms in India. He threw some light on factors like demographical transition in India and across the world that calls for the reforms regarding untimely withdrawals, coverage, etc. Further, the audience was captivated by Mr. Ranganathan, who expanded on Mr. Dave’s views but added a different dimension to the topic. These talks were followed by the final round of individual presentations given by the Lone Rangers. They were the finalists, selected after a rigorous screening of a plethora of entries sent from across the country. Their views on the Pension Fund Reforms in India and its future scenario clearly demonstrated the high quality of research and analysis that has gone into their work. At the end of the exhilarating series of presentations, the panel of judges, which included eminent personalities like Mr. Dave, Mr. Ranganathan, selected the three best presentations. They were: -

Winner: Abhay Kapadia, NMIMS
1st Runner up: Kartik Balan, SIMSR
2nd Runner up: Abhijeet Choudhary, IIT SOM

While the budding managers were being made aware of the various aspects of pension funds in India, the SIMSR INDEX was capturing the mood of the market. For the first time, a live software was installed to conduct a mock stock investing game. This software created an artificial bolt exactly replicating the real one .The milieu was showing the adrenalin level of the 10 teams who made it to the final rounds beating the whopping 25 other teams in the elimination rounds. Finally the stockiest from NMIMS, NITIE, SIMSR booked the highest profits respectively and were declared the winners.

In the later half of the day, the audience was intrigued by Mr. Aroop Dutta, MD, Numeric Investors who, having spent a better part of his life in Boston, was very informative on the hedge funds and other international experiences in investment banking. He even shared the knowledge he gained while interacting with the various hedge fund managers during his stints in India.

To analyze and throw some light on the Indian scenario of the mounting NPAs, Mr. A. L. Bongirwar, DGM IDBI reflected on NPA management, the story of corporate debt restructuring, and supplemented these with various methodologies and live cases to give the feel of what actually happens in practical life. His experience of how the various debts are restructured by the CDR cell and how they get compensated for taking the risk by financing the already indebted enterprises was quite informative for the budding financial managers.
