Press Release - July 17, 2004 This June, like every year, a fresh batch of young, bright, "laptop-savvy" wannabe managers - the batch of 2006 - entered the hallowed portals of XLRI, Jamshedpur. The strength of the Business Management Programme (BMD) and Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (PMIR) offered at XL - remains at 127 and 65 respectively. The new batch of 'gladiators' drew first blood in the arena of marketing through MAXI BAZAAR - a fun-filled, competitive activity in which budding managers are given a concept to market and promote over the weekend with the help of their seniors. Needless to say this ensures one of the many rapport-building exercises between the two batches. The latest batch of 'XLers' comes from a variety of backgrounds ranging from Economics to Engineering, Arts to Architecture, etc. Besides fresh graduates, the batch includes quite a few, 34 per cent to be precise, who bring with them an impressive record of work experience.
Engineers have cornered a lion's share - 79 per cent - (a rise in 7 percentage points) of the seats in BM programme. The distribution in the PMIR programme gives a similar picture, albeit with a relatively lesser proportion of Engineers (39 per cent). There seems to be a greater affinity amongst Economics and Arts and Science graduates for the PMIR programme than for the BM programme. The profile of the batch as a whole includes Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, Commerce graduates and an array of other streams including Architecture and Pharmacy and army personnel.
