XLRI Convocation Concludes On Grand Note

* 186 Managers Including First Executive Batch From Dubai Take The Oath
* Peace Medal Presented To Missionaries of Charity
* XLRI Director Retires After 10-year Service

As the Band played a Majestic 8 Minute March, the batch of 2004 of XLRI Jamshedpur, one of the oldest Management Schools in the Asia Pacific Region, established in 1949, received their post-graduate diplomas at the 48th Annual Convocation held at the Tata Auditorium, XLRI Jamshedpur.

It was a solemn occasion and the Auditorium was decked in maroon and yellow - the traditional colours of XLRI as the batch gathered to receive their diploma in the Ceremony. This included the first batch of Executive Post Graduate Programme students from Dubai who successfully completed their three-year course for working Executives.

The ceremony was declared open with the Academic Procession to the March played by a young School Band from Sacred Hearts School Jamshedpur, followed by the Prayer Song. This was followed by the Annual Report by the Director Fr. P. D. Thomas, XLRI.

Mr. B. Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel and Chairman of the Board of Governers for XLRI, then gave the presidential address. While heartily congratulating the new students, he reminded them life was not a 100m race but rather a marathon. "To finish this race, what one requires is a lot of stamina. This holds special significance at an age of intense competition in the corporate sector where many MBAs experience burnouts very early in their career due to the high stress that comes with the enormous responsibilities and round-the-clock work expected from the professionals at their work place." Mr. Muthuraman then made the official announcement that Fr. P. D. Thomas, the Director will be retiring from XLRI on April 30, 2004 after a 10-year tenure with the Institute. He is to be succeeded by Fr. Casimir Raj, Former Director, XIM Bhubaneshwar from May 1.

This was followed by the presentation of the Thirty Seventh Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial and Social Peace to the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata for the promotion of peace through celebration of human dignity. Sister Nirmala, who took over as Superior General after Mother Teresa, Nobel Laureate and founder of the Society, humbly accepted the "gift of love".
