XLRI Convocation Concludes On Grand Note

Previous

As the Dr. E. M. Rao, Dean of Academics, XLRI called out their names, the students filed in to receive the Medals for Academic Excellence. The J. M. Kumarappa award went to Ms. Aarti Sharma, who topped the Personnel Management & Industrial Relations batch while the ICI Medal went to Mr. Saurav Kumar Kedia, topper of the Business Management (BM) batch. Apart from that, Ms. Sharma also received the Chev. John P. D'Costa KSG Medal for Excellence in Managerial Ethics and N I P M medal for the best student in Personnel Management area. Mr. Kedia also received the Ram Awtar Chachra Memorial Medal for the best student in the Finance Area in BM. Mr. Sameer Goel and Mr. Shakeel Ahmad received the XLRI Medal for the Highest CQPI in India and Dubai respectively. This was followed by the presentations of the Long Service Medals for 25 and 15 years of service to the institute.

Dr. J. J. Irani, Director, Tata Sons, delivered the Convocation Speech in his inimitable style that had a liberal dose of wit and humour. Drawing heavily on his vast experience in the Corporate with anecdotes from yore, he asked the graduating batch to place emphasis on long-term planning. According to him, "Short-term strategies are building blocks, like pieces of a jigsaw that fit into the larger picture. Corporate leaders today require to be able to wield the trust and credibility of the members of the organization and hence, business ethics pays. His final word of advice for the young students stepping into the world of myriad corporate experience was to prepare for every possible opportunity, and seize them and hence to just 'go ahead and do it.'"

After a short reminiscent speech by the Alumnus Jubilarian of the batch of 1977 on how "XLRI had changed and still remained the same, retaining its unique XL Culture and upholding traditions of yore" to "new-generation XLers", and the National Anthem, the convocation session was declared closed and the recession took place. As the final curtain fell on the formalities, the auditorium burst with life as students sporting their black gowns and golden sashes broke into celebratory handshakes. Laughter and young dreams were the order of the day.

Good friends, marvellous faculty, classroom anxieties and examinations - all were left behind as the batch of 2004 of XLRI Jamshedpur passed through the portals of one the most prestigious Institutes of India.

In all, a batch of 62 students each from the Business Management and Personnel Management and Industrial Relations streams, 7 students from the Fellow Programme in Management and 55 Executive PGP students graduated during the Ceremony. The 25th and 10th Jubilarian Alumni Batches were present during the Ceremony, taking a walk down memory lane - literally at that - after passing out in 1977 and 1994 respectively.
