Information technology industry is a key driver in India's growth. To continue with the growth momentum achieved, the companies today are identifying verticals and applying IT to deliver more value to customers and realise more revenue. SOCRATES, the systems society of XLRI, in keeping with the times, organized the Sixth Annual IT Convention, the National IT Seminar 2004 on 6th and 7th November, 2004 with the current hot theme "IT in industry verticals".

The chief guests for the occasion were Mr. Kiran Karnik, President NASSCOM (over Video Conferencing) and Mr. R. S. Sharma, IT Secretary-cum-Commissioner, Govt. of Jharkhand. Mr. Kiran Karnik, in his message, emphasised the need for IT use in the non-industry sector: in agriculture, education and citizen-services (e-governance). His message read, "From NASSCOM, we have been keenly pursuing the need to accelerate the use of IT in industry. We see great potential and scope for this. Of special interest is IT use in the non-industry sector. These are areas of great need, large promise, and massive impact. We already have examples of successful use of IT in these fields; the challenge is scaling-up for nation-wide coverage." Expressing happiness over the initiative taken by XLRI in organizing the seminar, he said, "Meetings like this will help to share experiences and to create awareness and enthusiasm amongst students about the many applications of IT, so that it becomes a 'force-multiplier' for economic growth".

In the conference, Mr. R. S. Sharma announced plans for the IT policy for Jharkhand and said that the proposed policy would contain several incentives for attracting investments in the State's IT and IT Enabled Services sector. According to Mr. Sharma, around 50,000 new jobs would be created in the State's IT and ITES sector in the next two years.

The seminar was organized in 5 sessions, each focusing on a vertical. The conference incorporated the industry vertical (users) perspective as well as the solution provider (or IT companies) perspective. The verticals addressed were Banking and Financial Services, Organized Retail, Telecommunications, Manufacturing and the Human Resources.
