"Out Of Control: The New Biology of Business"
by Kevin Kelly

  • Organizations of future would be more like living organisms. This has been proved today and would be more powerfully proved tomorrow. Like organisms, organisations are very simple to look from outside but very complex from inside. Finger may look a very simple part of human body yet it is made of such complex material and processes that since till now could not fully decipher it; similarly every part of an organisation is dependent of each other. People talk about Laissez faire economies as totally free yet if some time could be given these economies also would start showing structures of a living organisation. Thus it can be seen that there is a lot, which happens in the natural world, and what happens in complex organisation relationship is quite similar.

  • At times if one wants to achieve something high and spectacular, best place to achieve it is in out of control situation. Risk of damage is also there yet most of the solutions are found in the state of chaos and out of control environment.

  • In future also technology will keep on functioning for resolving complexity into simplicity. For example technology is decoding genes to find out the cause of colour of tomato. In past science was called opposite to nature in future science would be more in shoes of nature.

  • Future of all organisations would be in the form of network. It has not beginning and no end. There will be no hierarchy, but lot of interdependence. As in economics theory of relative competitive advantages between countries would be full of networks. And that's why, when you have a network, you have this sense of not being in control. You have a sense of uncertainty, a sense of interdependency, sense even of relativity.

  • Due to network theory, the organisation would be moving from monolithic, vertical, homogenized institution, to extremely decentralized, extremely distributed, heterogeneous and flattened organisation. This will increase blurriness and an increased uncertainty about who is actually part of corporation and who is not. For example - Wired magazine asks its customers to type their addresses on e-portal, as they know best their addresses and magazine would be sent on their address. For this previously Wired employed people. Thus customer becomes part of the organisation.
