Summary

In today's workplace, it is certainly clear that we can no longer sit back and wait for 'someone' to give us constant direction on what to do next. Nor can we say to that 'someone', "if you need help, call me". "I can help you" is the battle cry of those who are willing to put their ideas out in front. Taking this approach can project a manager with mid-level authority into a leader.

Geoffrey Bellman suggests the following approach for leading when you are not in a position of designated authority.

  1. Lead on a small scale and grow through small successes. From proposing a task force to redesigning work processes, there are countless opportunities to lead that impact the organization positively without revolutionizing the industry.

  2. Lead toward your vision. Self-awareness and recognition of your own values is critical to helping others see your vision. Know how you "can help".

  3. Recognize that power is not only positional. Influence exists in every level of the organization. As you grow through small successes you gain confidence in decision-making, take more risks, and move toward your vision.

  4. Understand change at work. Four aspects of change need to be identified.
    Want: what is it that you really want, how do your wants differ from key players
    Is: what is the current reality, what are the boundaries of the situation
    Players: who needs to be involved, why are they invested
    You: why are you invested in changing, what talents or resources do you have
    Distinguishing and appreciating the relationship and gaps between these aspects will help you communicate and lead others.

  5. Expect not to be appreciated. Success, progress, and navigating change are expectations for leaders at all levels. Waiting for praise and rewards will not bring you to the next success.
