Strategic Management of Intellectual Captial & Organizational Knowledge
Program Director: Prof. Ajeet N. Mathur
April 18-21, 2007
At IIM Ahmedabad
Fees: Rs. 58,000 (US$ 1400 for participants from other countries)

Introduction: Capabilities of seeding and harvesting organisational knowledge to generate economic rent and social value are mainly collective in nature. Strategic management of intellectual capital and organisational knowledge involves understanding and interpreting complex dynamics of management processes through
sharing brought forth through interactional exchanges and the nexus of tacit and implicit treaties inside and outside an organisation. Valuable intellectual capital is socially created, collectively held and politically embedded inside boundaries and governance structures of an organisation from where it is economically leveraged. Such intellectual capital and organisational knowledge of an organisation is difficult to know or experience or measure by reliance on indicators available from information flows and reporting relationships, or by quantity and quality of legal protection of intellectual properties or inventories of trade secrets or by the quanta of disbursements of innovation rewards/incentives.

This workshop is an opportunity to examine assumptions, limits and considerations for intellectual capital protection underlying designs and patterns of management processes, organisation structures, complex contracting and control systems that impact knowledge creation, innovation and managerial productivity as issues in strategic management of intellectual capital and social capital.

Objectives:

  • Understanding motives and powerbases of actors impacting the local, national and global contexts of intellectual capital formation under WIPO and TRIPS regimes

  • Designing cross-border value constellations of social and intellectual capital for proactive participation in missing markets of the international business environment, understanding missing elements in local-global exchanges and structuring access and benefit sharing agreements

  • Discussing traps, identifying pitfalls, raising problems, and resolving issues in the protection and leveraging of knowledge created and management process innovations with particular reference to intellectual property protection and limits of IPR protection

  • Facilitating integration of social capital and intellectual capital through synthesis in management processes addressing issues arising from systemic problems, structural impediments, cultural conflicts, technological limits and institutional barriers for seeding and harvesting innovations

  • Providing a forum for sharing experiences of participants

    For:

  • Top and senior executives responsible for business units or functions.

  • Role holders responsible for strategic management, organisation design, human response development, knowledge management, innovation, organisation development and management process quality initiatives in large and medium private and public enterprises, public systems and international organisations.

    Contents:

  • Arenas of cross-border contestation in strategic management of intellectual capital and IPR protection thresholds and limits

  • Assumptions and considerations underlying designs and patterns of management processes, organisation structures and control systems

  • Knowledge creation, intellectual capital protection and its leveraging, managerial productivity and complex contracting

  • How social capital and intellectual capital enmesh through hermeneutic processes
