Contents: Contract farming is receiving increasing attention from the agribusiness firms as well as the Government of India and various state governments for more than a decade. While agribusiness firms view it as a tool for managing raw materials, the governments consider it as an avenue to develop markets, transfer technology, provide inputs including credit, etc. A number of agribusiness firms have started contract farming of a number of agricultural and horticultural crops. They follow their own models and have varied experience. While some of them are working smoothly others experienced certain problems. The problems arose because of improper design or ineffective implementation. At times government policy acted as a road block. In some cases the participating farmers are not happy in some other cases firms had bad experience. At the Institute we had conducted studies to document the experiences of firms and farmers. This management development programme is an effort to share those experiences with the executives associated with the contract farming activity. The objective is to develop a broader understanding of the concept and develop skills of the participants in designing and implementation of contract farming programmes on sustainable basis.
