IIM Ahmedabad

Authority, Organization, Roles & Strategy: A Working Conference
Program Director: Prof. Ajeet N. Mathur
February 11-16, 2008
At IIM Ahmedabad

Objectives: Valuable knowledge is socially created, collectively held, and politically embedded inside an organization from where it is economically leveraged for doing. Strategies in organisations involve working in and with groups, understanding organisational knowledge howsoever embedded, and interpreting complex dynamics of overt and covert management processes.

This Group Relations Conference (a Working Conference) is a special kind of experiential temporary learning institution for the purpose of developing deeper understanding of processes that occur when persons exercise authority, take up roles and develop strategies to engage with the politics of relatedness of groups and organisations. This working conference is an opportunity to examine assumptions, limits, and considerations underlying designs and patterns of management processes, organization structures, and complex contracting and control systems. Previous experience or exposure to this or other approaches is not necessary.

The Primary Task of the Conference is to experience and explore ways in which we use authority, take and make roles, engage with tasks, develop organisation strategies, understand leadership and interpret the politics of relatedness within the conference as an institution. The working conference aims at: -

  • Providing boundaries of the conference institution in which persons can take up roles to engage with the experiential study of group and organisation behaviour to develop insights about how organisation systems, governance structures and management processes enmesh

  • Enabling participants to acquire insights and skills to expand their understanding of their roles in institutions i.e. their professions, workplace, government, families, neighbourhood, community, and other groups to which they belong

  • Offering appropriate boundary conditions where participants take up roles to observe and interpret discrepancies between the stated task of a group and the task it actually appears to be pursuing; and, differences between designated roles and imputed roles that may arise from covert processes

  • Developing linkages between insights, experimental praxis and applications for harmonious and productive personal and professional life

    For:

  • Anyone with a wish to learn and develop experiential understanding of authority, roles, leadership, organisation strategies and politics of relatedness in intra-group, inter-group and institutional relations within and across boundaries of organisations.

  • Those with responsibility for strategic management, organization design, human response development, management innovations, organization development, administration, or management process quality initiatives in government, private and public enterprises, public systems, voluntary organisations and international organizations.
