The second day of ‘Kartavya’ started on the dot and the attendance, as on Day One, was pretty impressive for a Sunday. The day’s proceedings started off with a welcome speech by Dr. Jayasankaran. The speakers for the session were Mrs. Mala Ramadurai, the founder of Maitree - TCS, and Mr. R. Srinivasan, a member of the CMC of ITC Ltd.

Mrs. Ramadurai opened by saying that CSR endeavours were always part of the TATA Group and quoted the definition of Corporate Social Responsibility as given by Lord Holme and Richard Watts. Mrs. Ramadurai put Maitree as an attempt to develop the internal community at TCS and added that it laid emphasis on all round improvement among the youngsters it touched. In her opinion, Maitree involved interaction among employees of all ages and their families.

This community of employees contributed to various activities like helping street children through Vatsalaya, CRY, supporting the Shepherd Widows’ Home, the Mother Teresa’s Home for Children and other such organizations meriting help. She said that they also contributed in a generous manner to the help being done by Tata Relief. Mrs. Ramadurai closed her presentation by informing the audience that Maitree aimed to play a major role in the third generation of reforms and was already actively involved in developing software for computer based functional literacy.

Mr. Srinivasan, the next speaker, spoke on Corporate Sustainability, with a disclaimer that his views about to be expressed would be an ‘unabashed corporate stand’ on CSR. He elucidated at length over the ‘Triple Bottomline' comprising the Social angle, the Environmental angle and the Economic angle of an enterprise. He then drew a comparison of China and India highlighting the differences which gave certain advantages to each country in certain areas. He also touched on the shifting pressures which had to be addressed in today’s scenario. He then moved on to the activities of ITC which he said primarily focussed on empowering the underprivileged in rural India.
