Business Basics And Management Mantras
C. K. Prahalad Management Guru For The Masses

From Core Competency To Bottom Of The Pyramid

- by Prof. M. Guru Prasad*

Coimbatore Krishnarao Prahalad, Distinguished Professor in the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and a world authority on management thought, passed away recently in San Diego after a brief illness.

He was known for his work specialising in corporate strategy focusing on top management in large, diversified, multinational corporations. In addition, as an extraordinary speaker and communicator, he influenced thousands of students and hundreds of companies with his vision and perspectives. Along with the late Sumantra Ghoshal and a few others, Prahalad was part of a phalanx of Indian-origin stalwarts making waves in business schools in the West.

C. K. Prahalad was an interesting combination of an academic and a practitioner. Professor Prahalad's seminal work, alongside Gary Hamel in the 1990s, on the concept of "core competence" of companies won the McKinsey Prize and sold the maximum number of reprints in the entire 80-odd years of history of its publisher, the prestigious Harvard Business Review. He was also known widely for his interest in the "Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid" -- and his book on the subject is considered an authoritative exposition of the potential for large corporations to improve the conditions of the poor in countries such as India. They could do so, he argued by "mobilising investment capacity [along with] the commitment of NGOs and the communities that need help." The poor must become active, informed and involved consumers, he urged.

Core Competence Of The Coporates

As a professor of strategy, Prahalad was perhaps peerless; he teamed up with Gary Hamel to come up with the seminal idea of the "core competence of the corporation" in a famous Harvard Business Review article from the 1980s. According to Prahalad and Hamel, "stick to the knitting" made a great deal of sense - they suggested that a company figure out its true strength, focus on building up its ability to become impregnable in that area, and then produce a slew of products all based on this core competence.

The duo followed this up with the even more stunning paper on "strategic intent" - a true HBR classic. Impressed by the then seemingly-unstoppable Japanese invasion of the automobile sector and the electronics sector, Prahalad and Hamel argued that unlike short-term-focused Americans, Japanese planned a long-term strategy based on an intent that was clear, easily articulated, and around which all its activities could revolve.
