As the above figures show, the placement at Indian leading B-school is similar to elite B-schools across the globe.

Consulting seems to be a favourite at Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business and London School of Business along with IIMA with almost a third of class opting for consultancy.

Marketing/sales/advertising seems to be slipping downward across the US B-schools, with only on an average 10% of class opting for it. However, at LSB, slightly more than a tenth of the class opted for marketing, whereas at IIMA, a third of the class opted for marketing. However, this figure at IIMA slipped down a little at Placement 2000.

Information Management seems to be founding equal favour with students across the globe with a tenth of the class opting for a career in Information Management. Students prefer computer software vis-à-vis computer hardware companies across campuses. High Technology firms account for 1% of class and the Telecommunications attract another 2% of the class. This figure is quite higher at Stanford. The students opting for their own venture is quite high at Wharton and Stanford compared to IIMA.

In the finance arena 14-16% of the class opted for Investment Banking/Brokerage and Investment Management. Another 2-3% of the class opted for other related areas of banking/finance. This figure for students opting for finance is also in line with the similar percentage across the globe.

Regarding preference for Venture Capital and e-Commerce , placement 2000 saw the advent of the Venture Capitalists and Internet companies on the IIM campuses. Chrysalis picked 2 students at IIMB and one at IIMA, while IndOcean Chase picked up a student at IIMA. Internet/e-commerce companies like Planetasia, which used to recruit from IIMA did not get the chance this time at IIMA. However, Planetasia, Caltiger, Iris among others did select students from IIMC and IIMB. However, the percentage of students for Venture Capital career is still very low at around 1%, and for e-Commerce, around a few (2%). This is very low as compared to US B-schools, where the figures for similar industry are around 12-14% for Venture Capital and around 10% for Internet/ e-Commerce careers. At US campuses, leading Internet companies like Yahoo! Inc., Amazon, AllAdvantage.com, Doublebill.com and e-Bay are regular recruiters. And these were classified among 23 top new organisation recognised (i.e. star recruiters) among 52 recruiting organisations making to Stanford Graduate School of Business, i.e. those companies which recruit three or more students from Class of 1999.

Our prediction

With the stabilising of the Internet business in India and the growth of net business, within a couple of years, Indian dot com companies would be recruiting students directly from campuses, instead of present trend of lateral recruitment. And more foreign Investment banks and financial services companies like Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette, Oak Hill Capital Management Inc., The Chase Management Bank, NationsBanc Montgomery Securities would be coming to Indian Campuses, starting from IIMA and moving on to other IIMs in due course of time. Graduate Indian MBA has arrived!

Bingo!
