Held on December 17, 2004

The event started with a speech by Dr. Jamshed Modi, Professor of Operations Management, SPJIMR. He gave a brief overview of the changing face of Six Sigma: from manufacturing to hospitality, medical services and hospitals. In his keynote speech, he spoke about a hitherto un-explored area of possible Six Sigma deployment: the Indian governmental services, public institutions and bureaucracy. It is as important for these inefficient and low productivity sectors to transform themselves to the architects of a modern, fast growing Indian economy and state. The rigorous Six Sigma framework would be ideal for this purpose, he emphasized.

Handing the proceedings over to the guest speakers for the day, he expressed the hope that the session would help in clearing up some of the misconceptions and reservations the corporate sector has regarding Six Sigma, and broadening the understanding of this powerful framework.

The first speaker, Mr. Harmeet Chawla, after a brief introduction to the Six Sigma methodology, sought to bust the myth that it is the preserve of corporate giants with deep pockets with insights into how even Indian Small & Medium Enterprises can leverage this powerful tool for organizational efficiency and competitiveness. This, he said, can be achieved from a shift from the high cost Strategic Six Sigma to Simplified Six Sigma. He also emphasized on the need for commitment at all levels of the organizational structure in a process that requires a total cultural shift. For KPMG, he said, Six Sigma is a philosophy, a statistical measurement, a metric and a sound business strategy all rolled into one.

Mr. Sumant Misra, HDFC, built on the theoretical base laid by Mr. Chawla with immensely practical and relevant examples of applying the Six Sigma methodology to customer-service oriented processes in HDFC. He spoke about how the structured approach emphasized by Six Sigma can help develop simple solutions to complex problems in an environment characterized more by human interactions, as opposed to the machine and process-centered manufacturing environment. His presentation, laced with humor and peppered with examples that the audience could directly relate with, brought out the commitment and passion for customer satisfaction that makes HDFC one of the premier Indian banks. He also conveyed the importance of realizing that Six Sigma is not a quick-fix remedy, but requires a change in mindset: Six Sigma and discipline go hand-in-hand.
