Legal Offshoring

- by Manas Ranjan Mishra *

Page - 1

Introduction

In the past decade, India's information technology (IT) services industry has emerged as an important player in the global IT services market. After information technology enabled services (ITES) and business process outsourcing (BPO) providing employment boom to the large educated unemployed population of
the country, off shoring of legal services to India is the next big thing in the knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) space. Though still in its nascent stage, it is expected to grow in a big way.

Strengths: India's Competitive Advantage

India first benefited from the off shoring trend as it had a large pool of English speaking and technically proficient manpower. India is leading offshore destination at the same time we have affordable communication and network infrastructure. There are very few jobs the lawyers sitting in Bangalore, Mumbai or New Delhi can't perform. For a bargain hourly rate as low as $60 compared with $350 at the low end of the typical US scale, Firms can study legal precedents in state law to craft arguments in a trial brief. The Indian lawyers offer advantages other than their low cost as:

  • they have a fresh perspective and their approach is very innovative

  • see solutions even which most qualified don't see

  • are instrumental to getting favorable results in even the complex cases

  • India and the US, have a common law jurisdiction, this is an advantage as well. Salaries for top law graduates in India stand at one-tenth of US lawyers'. Another advantage is the time difference between India and the US.
