Growth Collaterals: Securing Tomorrow - 'Carbon Trading'

- by Prateek Mathur & Pinky Singh *

(CDM Clean Development Mechanism) Market Potential in India

Analysts peg the global carbon trading market at $ 100 billion by 2010. Indian carbon market has the potential to supply 30-50% of the projected global market of $ 700 million CER (Certified Emission Reduction) units by 2012.

The country's dominance in carbon trading is expected to be driven, not so much by the domestic industry, but more by its huge tracts of plantation land, estimated to be over 15 million hectares, much larger than Australia which aims to be a major player in emission trading by adding 2 million hectare plantation by 2020.

India, being a developing country, qualifies to be a host country for CDM projects. The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies estimates the potential for CDM projects in India to be about 300 million tonnes of CO{-2} equivalent, which includes 90 million tonnes from renewable energy sources alone.

For a detailed break-up on India's position in the global CDM market, refer to Annexure A.

This potential for CDM projects is spread across several industries, as illustrated in the next section.
