5. Attaining Perfection: This principle of lean thinking expects 'To do it right at the first time'. It means the target is to improve quality at every step in the process so that the defects are not accumulated at the end of the assembly line. There are various techniques to achieve this goal such as poka-yoke, 5 S and visual inspection.

The Seven Wastes

1. Overproduction and early production: This means producing over the customer requirements, producing unnecessary materials / products, or making them earlier than actually demanded by the customer.

2. Waiting: This includes the time delays, idle time (in which value is not added to the product).

3. Transportation: This has multiple handling, delayed handling or unnecessary handling.

4. Inventory: Holding or purchasing unnecessary raw materials, WIP or finished goods.

5. Motion: Actions of people or equipment, which do not add value to the product.

6. Over processing: Unnecessary steps or work elements which don't add any value.

7. Defective units: Production of a part that is scrapped or requires re-work.
