Initiatives taken by Government

1. National e-Governance Plan (NeGP): for executing the infrastructure projects for both Urban and Rural development. This plan focuses on implementing ICT for rural development, Disaster Management Support Program (DSMP) under the leadership of ISRO and National Remote Sensing Agency based out in Hyderabad. This plan is ready to take off by the end of December 2006. This is developed in light of the failures (35% - total failures; 50% partial failures; 15% - successful) of the various e-governance projects (integrating IT for better governance and development of the nation) due to poor project conceptualization and shortfall of professional project management. The objective of NeGP is to address the gaps and enhance the success rate and sustainability.
2. Rural Development: Providing 1, 00,000 Common Service Centers, those are enabled using ICT, implemented by DIT and PPP. Establishing SWAN (State Wide Area Networks) for e-governance implementation in rural India. Various other models are developed for water shed development, e-learning, Agricultural Warehousing etc.
3. Disaster Support Management Program (DSMP): To effectively manage the natural calamities like floods, earthquakes etc. this IT initiative is taken with the support of Hyderabad based National Sensing Remote Agency and ISRO
4. Wi-Fi Enabled railway stations in Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahemadabad, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkatta, and Chennai
