Limitations & Conclusion

While this paper has attempted to review the adoption of lean production techniques by the Indian manufacturing sector, its scope has been restricted by the following limitations: -

(i). All of the company-specific data in the paper is derived from secondary sources. A primary survey would perhaps gain more insights into the factors that drive success or failure of lean production techniques.

(ii). In many cases, the secondary data is also available in very generalized terms, from which we cannot gain much insight into specific practices followed and benefits accrued.

(iii). It might be more fruitful to carry out studies of adoption of lean techniques by sector, as each sector has its own set of advantages and limitations.

Finally, we conclude that although there a lot of challenges for Indian manufacturing in the times ahead in terms of achieving greater and greater manufacturing efficiency, rational and systematic adoption of lean techniques holds out hope for the future.
