Some of the BPO/ITES organizations that are the offshoot of Indian IT giants like Infosys, Wipro, and Cognizant Technology Solutions are already aware of the sophisticated estimation techniques that their parent company has been using to manage their projects. But the other new organizations are in the process of building competencies in this area.

Some of the most popularly used estimation techniques (adopted from Software Cost Estimation - Hareton Leung Zhang Fan Department of Computing The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) are:

  • Expert Judgment
  • Function Point Analysis

    Expert Judgment: Experts, who have an in-depth understanding of the business backed by experience, usually do estimation. This has been a very useful technique. However, it might not be very useful if the business is new and also does not provide an objective and accurate estimate. In the case of BPO where most of the organizations are still not mature, this technique might prove to be fatal.

    The method of expert judgment usually involves consulting one or more experts. The experts provide estimates using their own methods and experience. Expert-consensus mechanisms such as Delphi technique or PERT is used to resolve the inconsistencies in the estimates. The Delphi technique works as follows:
