Consultancy The runaway train!Highlights * Monitor comes to India. * Increased packages of Rs. 12 Lakhs (8.5 Lakhs in '00). * US, London, Germany postings. * Filtering down Effect. * Stiff Competition from Wall Street I-banks at IIMs. The Overview While Consultancy was a favourite at the campuses, it faced a tough competition with Wall Street I-banks, a drastic change from days of yore when it was undisputed darling at Day zero. It's a positive sign that Indian B-schools are catching up with US B-schools' placements as far as the trend goes. At US B-schools, there is neck-to-neck competition between Consultancy and I-Banks for the cream of the class. Monitor has made its debut. Monitor, a Michael Porter (Harvard Prof. and an authority on Competitive Strategy) company, starting consulting operations in India, made an offer for Rs.13,00,000/-. It had shortlisted 10 students across the IIMs and XLRI, and made the final offer to an XLRI student. Salary includes housing in Bombay and person will be on the payroll of Singapore office. Other leading recruiter was Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) with Rs 9.5 Lakh offer. It recruited in large numbers with 6 offers at XLRI. BCG and McKinsey were also there with offers of Rs 12 Lakh each. At NITIE, KPMG made nine offers in the areas of MCS (Management Consultancy Services) & IRM (Information Risk Management). PWC (Price Waterhouse Coopers) made seven offers. PWC stole the limelight at IIMC with 17 offers. AT Kearney made 6 offers at IIMB and 5 offers at IIMC. Arthur Andersen made high of 6 offers at IIML. BCG made 4 offers at IIMA, 5 at IIMC, 3 at IIMB and 1 at IIML. McKinsey made 8 offers at IIMB and IIMC each. Tata Strategic Management Group (TSMG) made 2 offers at IIMB and 3 offers at IIML. KPMG made 6 offers at IIMB, 6 at SP Jain and 9 at NITIE. Accenture was also on recruiting spree after separating from parent Arthur Andersen and made 4,3,6,5 offers at IIMC, IIMB, IIML and XLRI respectively. Arthur Andersen also made 6 offers at IIML and 3 offers each at IIMB, Bajaj, XLRI, plus a solitary offer at IIMK. Among IT consulting, i2 Technologies was clear favourite along with Deolitte Consulting. Deolitte Consulting made 6 offers at IIMB. Exeter took five students from IIMB. i2 Technologies made 15,5,14 offers at IIMC, IIMB and IIML (probably something to do with high engineering mix at IIMC and IIML). Overall around 27% of class at various IIMs opted for a career in consultancy. IIM Indore and IIM Kozikhoe had 8% and so did other leading B-schools outside IIMs.
