Medical Colleges: Medical colleges and providers of continuous medical education can contribute by establishing a focus on good prescribing and on rational use of drugs. In collaboration with the pharmacies, they would be in a position to change the currently rather careless prescription practices.

Rational Use of Drugs

No proper emphasis has been placed on the rational use of drugs in most Indian states, despite clear evidence that it can be an efficient method of cutting costs and focusing resources on vital problems. Prescribing and dispensing patterns are not satisfactory and there are no standardized treatment guidelines either in the public or private sector.

The following steps can be taken for improving the situation: -

  • Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs), to be followed by both public and private sectors

  • The selection of essential drugs should be based on the list of common conditions and the treatment of choice for these conditions given in STGs

  • Consumer organizations should be actively engaged in public education about drugs, and government resources should support these efforts

  • Train pharmacists and drug sellers to be active members of the healthcare team and to offer useful advice to consumers about health and drugs
