In the Indian examples that we examine below, we will try to measure the impact of adoption of lean techniques in terms of metrics like those listed above, wherever the relevant data is available.

The Indian Scenario

As mentioned earlier, the adoption of lean production techniques has penetrated only in a very limited way into the Indian manufacturing sector. There are still only a handful of examples to examine and learn from. Some such examples will be examined here.

The Auto Components Industry - Leading the Way

The auto components industry in India has been a success story as it has improved its quality and delivery capabilities dramatically. We can identify two drivers for this growth: -

(a). Emergence of global sourcing:
The major automobile manufacturers, particularly in the US, have been looking to suppliers in countries like China and India to supply them with quality components. Indian firms have become Tier-I or Tier-II suppliers in the supply chain of well-known auto manufacturers. These manufacturers have made significant investments in developing the capabilities of their suppliers, and Indian firms have been beneficiaries of such investment.
