(b). International support:
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), along with other agencies and industry associations, undertook a pilot programme involving 20 auto component manufacturers in Maharashtra, to impart shop-floor level technical assistance from experts. This included training and application of the principles of lean production. The programme cost $ 305,000. The following table shows the measures adopted and resulting benefits accrued to the component manufacturers: -

Measures Adopted Benefits Accrued
Workspace relayout and changes in production flow 40% reduction in product throughput time
SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) in plastic and metal die sub-sectors 75% reduction in die changeover time
25% reduction in delivery lead time of a variety of products
Introducing standard operating procedures 75% reduction in production lead time
Preventive maintenance practices 30% reduction in machine downtime
