Exporting to global markets is not a new phenomenon. Our resources and primary industries have underpinned our trade economy since nationhood. But globalization has supplanted our national isolation, and no longer can our small domestic markets be protected from global competition. Tariff schemes don't fit our trade directions despite the continued imposition of high tariffs in many of our regional markets.

The key concept that distinguishes a global supply chain from its constituent entities is the integration of operations across the chain. Global Supply Chain Management goes beyond mere interface coordination across firms in which firms optimize firm-level objectives. Global supply chain management explicitly recognizes inter-dependencies and requires effective relationship management. The main challenge in global supply chain management is the development of decision-making frameworks that accommodate diverse concerns of multiple entities across the supply chain.
