I sampled Dapper.net, by far the most rampant example of mashups, and found a landing page with two slogans: -

  • Get any content from web

  • Get more traffic to your site

    I think, we as a generation of net entrepreneurs have missed the forest for the trees. Sole motto of new generation websites is to drive users to our landing page in droves. That's it. It doesn't matter whether we copied the content from 5 other sites, and somehow managed to grab the eyeball. Does it create any value? Any economic sense? Mashing content from 100 mediocre sites will still remain a mediocre (and mashed-up) website. Someone has to generate genuinely meaningful fresh content for users to visit your site daily. How about generating fresh content for a change and attracting visitors the plain old way!

    5. Bad design

    Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen has warned companies of neglecting the basics of good design in their Web 2.0 websites. He has warned that the rush to make web pages more dynamic often meant users were badly served. Websites embedded with personalization tools often resemble the "glossy but useless" sites that were in vogue in dotcom heydays.

    The established web players more often than not consider usability and accessibility a major effort in their web site layout. Building a site easy to use, with good search tools, the use of content free of jargon, usability testing and a consideration of design are some key parameters in popular Internet websites.

    The Web 2.0 culture is entirely focused on the new generation of web users. For example, the tech-savvy undergrads that have considerable time to spend online, and are aware of the scenario beneath the hood of the popular web-service they are addicted to. To cater to this market, web designers in Web 2.0 era ignore the basics of design that have evolved in the past decade or so.
