The corporates that do spend on security solutions, do so either out of compulsion or because they have linked their networks to the Internet and conduct transactions online. Financial institutions like banks have to abide with regulations that have prescribed levels of security. But although the average Indian enterprise isn't spending too much on security, awareness levels have certainly increased.

Technology Trend - Primary Research

  • Antivirus/ Firewall is most commonly used (33%) followed by Virtual Private Networks (19%), Access Control (17%), Digital ID (9%), Intrusion Detection (7%), Secured Login (7%)

  • New Technologies like Encryption (4%), Reusable Password (3%) and Biometrics (1%) are used very rarely.

    Issues in Enterprise Security Consulting

    Lack of Awareness

Indian enterprise generally lacks awareness and conviction, which results in failure of security initiatives. Awareness is more important than the technolgy being used. The shift from IT security being a vendor-driven initiative to a user-driven initiative will happen only when the entire organization is aware of IT security. A major challenge in implementing proper security is lack of conviction. This results in efforts limited to superficial security measures. With such a perspective, security tends to be more of a superficial nature than really achieve its objectives. This is one of the important reasons why the Indian information security market is still more vendor-driven in nature than a user-driven market.
