CoolAvenues' Interview with:
G. V. P. Rajan
International Programme in Management for Executives (IPMX),
Batch 2008-09,
IIM Lucknow - Noida Campus.

  1. General Questions
  2. Questions related to Pre-MBA Preparation
  3. Interview-related Questions
  4. After Joining MBA

3. Interview-related Questions

Q. How did you prepare for the interview?
A. I used to read a lot on the current issues in newspapers and on the net. Since I was an HR professional, I also took note of managerial issues that I faced in my job. I read a lot of magazines to be up-to-date. This helped me a lot in facing the interview board.

Q. How many interview calls did you get and from which institutes? How many and which ones of these could you actually convert to a Final Call?
A. I got 5 calls, converted 3.

Q. Date and location of Interview? Were you given the option to choose? Was the interview date fixed or rescheduled couple of times? Was the interview venue changed or scheduled as per your convenience?
A. No. My interview was scheduled at Noida and it was as per the fixed schedule.

Q. Can you tell us about the panel that interviewed you?
A. The panel was quite interesting. They made me feel comfortable. There were 3 members.

Q. How long was your interview?
A. 20-25 minutes.

Q. What kind of questions were you asked? Were they specific to any particular area?
A. They asked many questions related to my job, organization where I worked, hobbies, my favourite actor, films, my hobbies. It was like a rapid-fire-round where the questions followed in quick succession. They also wanted to know why I wanted to join IPMX.

Q. What were the first question, the most interesting question, the most difficult question?
A. Why IPMX? Why at this juncture? What if you were not selected?

Q. While facing the panel, were you confident, did you feel prepared?
A. I was feeling a bit nervous but when the interview started, I was more at ease, probably because I could answer the first three questions.

Q. Was any feedback given to you? What feedback did you receive from the panel at the end of session?
A. No feedback was given.

Q. How would you rate your performance in the Interview?
A. 8/10.

Q. Write a brief about your Interview experience.
A. The interview started off with general questions like - "Tell us about your job profile", "What is the situation in the energy sector like?" etc. After this, there were a few general awareness questions which I answered correctly. Then questions came in a rapid succession and it was, as I said earlier, like a "rapid fire quiz" which included everything under the sun from hobbies, political issues and organizational issues. I did not know how many I answered correctly at that point of time, but when I came out, I was pretty sure that I did well. Throughout the interview, I was comfortable and was expecting some of the questions like "Why MBA now?" etc. The panel was nice in putting the questions and even when they grilled me on some of my replies, it was not stressful.

Q. Areas where you could have performed better in your interview?
A. As I said that the interview was more like a rapid-fire-round, a volley of questions came one after the other that gave me practically no time to think. In this, I think I wrongly answered a couple of easy questions. I think if I were mentally prepared for this, I could have done much better. There is always scope for improvement.

Q. Give some handy tips regarding interview that would be of great help to MBA aspirants.
A. During my interview, there were several questions that asked me to re-think on my decision to join IPMX or to re-evaluate my goals. I feel that I was pretty confidant of what I wanted from the programme, so I stuck to my guns. Maybe this was a right strategy. So my take is that one must be clear and focused on their goals.
