Final Placements 2001 at IIM Indore

Indian Institute of Management Indore is creating ripples in the corporate world with its final placements for 2001.

The placement scene for 2001 has been almost too good to believe. With 2.48 offers per student, the relatively small batch of 37 was placed within 32 hours! 46 companies were slated to participate in the final placements, but only 33 could be accommodated, as companies lapped up the students.

Some of the prominent recruiters on campus were - Citibank, HSBC, GE Caps, Glaxo SmithKline, Asian Paints, Coca-Cola, Satyam, Wipro and NIIT.

12 International postings were offered - by NIIT, STG International and EMDICO. The average dollar salary was $80,000. And 10 students had the choice of being placed abroad - that's nearly 1/4th of the batch!

A number of lateral and pre-placement offers were also made. Companies participating in the lateral placement process included - GE Caps, Satyam, NIIT, RPG, PMSI (Mynd Corporation) and SQL Star International. Our students also earned pre-placement offers from Citibank, Asian Paints, ABN Amro Bank and Godrej Soaps.

The average INR salary was Rs. 5.18 lakhs (up 62% from last year's offer). And this is excluding ESOPs offered by companies such as Wipro, Satyam and STG International.

The sector wise break-up is as follows: -

Marketing: In the marketing arena, FMCG majors such as, Glaxo SmithKline, Coca-Cola, Cadbury's, Marico, Madura Coats and Godrej Soaps, were in the hunt to pick up the marketing talent. Asian Paints and Carrier Aircon were amongst the consumer durable majors.

Banking & Financial Services: GE Caps, HSBC, ABN Amro Bank and BNP made 2 offers each, Citibank made 3, and ICICI Bank recruited 5. Other finance companies that came to IIMI were SBI Mutual Funds, IDFC and STCI. Thus, the financial services sector accounted for nearly 44% of the final offers accepted by the students.

Information Technology: The IT companies were big on campus. Unlike last year, when the rush was from the dotcoms, this year, it was the established stalwarts of the IT and knowledge sectors, which were bidding for the engineers and techies of the batch. Firms such as NIIT, Satyam, Wipro, STG International, I-Flex, PMSI (Mynd corporation), Bangalore Labs and Newgen made 29 offers between them, and accounted for nearly 35% of the batch. STG International led the way with 3 foreign postings (US based) and NIIT (US based) offered one at $90,000 p.a.

Others: Diversified groups, such as Birla Management Corporation and RPG and other consultancies accounted for the remainder candidates. Having already established a relationship with consultancies, such as Caps Gemini, Ernst & Young, A.F. Fergusson and Mind Tree Consulting during the summer placements, the consultancy fever has certainly caught on at IIM Indore as well.

Just to give a comparison with the figures last year - the highest Indian salary has jumped from Rs. 4.15 lakhs to a phenomenal Rs. 12 lakhs, (CTC) offered by HSBC. Even the highest dollar salaries have increased substantially from $60,000 to $90,000 (NIIT). And the offers per student increased from 1.94 to 2.47 per student.

The Dotcom bubble certainly seems to have burst, with traditional players regaining the limelight. Compensation packages have gone up across various sectors. And at IIMI, the majority has been placed in financial firms, this year.

Summary

Batch Strength - 37

Offers accepted:

FMCG - 11%
Banking & Financial Services - 44%
Information Technology - 36%
Others - 8%

Number of foreign postings offered - 12

The remarkable feature about placements at IIM Indore, was the opportunity that each of the 37 students got, to interview with companies of their choice. Perhaps, on no other campus is it easier to stand out of the crowd and attract the attention of the best companies that the corporate world has to offer. As the Institute grows and readies to move into its new campus (atop a sprawling 194-acre hillock), IIMIites can certainly look forward to the best facilities, faculty and placements in the years to follow.
