Criticality of the medicine is defined in terms of its severe requirement for the disaster. Highly critical supplies include the items, without which it is very difficult to protect or serve the disaster victims. Based upon these two factors the supplies are categorized into 9 classes as shown below in the graph. These classes can help to identify the supplies which are to keep in store or be procured at the time of disaster.

  • The increasing critical nature of supplies under consideration necessitates the storage of the supplies so as to control the disaster effects in early stages. On the volume front, the increased required volume of supplies necessitates building contracts and orders with suppliers, which can be activated at the time of requirement and the material be supplied at the right place.

  • The high critical high volume items are severely needed for any disaster, so these items has to be kept in store at any cost.

  • On the other side, the less critical low volume items which are not severe for the disaster can be procured at the time of disaster.

The above classification framework helps to identify the DRSEs to be stored or procured at the time of disaster. Another factor that defines the storage requirements for DRSEs is the perishable nature of the supplies.
