  • Highly perishable

  • Less perishable

  • High perishable nature of DRSEs requires special storage and transportation like requirement of cold chain. So by combining these three factors, the DRSEs can be prioritized and categorized for storage and distribution.

Step 2: Inventory Management of DRSEs

Inventory management mainly concerns about the required stock of selected DSREs at regional level. So that all the member hospitals will have DRSEs supplied when ever required. As the first step has already identified the items that are to be stored, so the next is to be found out the stock level to be maintained for each item.

The required Stock Level depends upon two factors:

  • No. of causalities, the hospitals have planned to handle: The factor will give the consumption rate of any DRSE during disaster

  • Lead time: lead time is measured in days

  • Step 3: Locating Warehousing Site

Warehouse location is crucial in implementing Supply chain Management in disaster, as it requires major investments and is inflexible. The decision involves the tradeoff between the responsiveness and cost of warehouses. The following stepwise procedure will help deciding the no. and location of the warehouses: -

  • Divide the whole zone under consideration into no. of population zones. The centre of zone serves as the potential site for locating warehouses.

  • Decide the responsiveness level of the supply chain. This means deciding the time limit, with in which the warehouse must be able to supply the required material at the required site.

  • Based upon the time limit, the maximum distance at which the warehouse can be located from the population will be decided. The manager will also decide upon the minimum distance limit for the same.
